Every October, Berlin’s biggest and most beautiful monuments become stars in the annual festival of illumination Berlin Leuchtet. Running for a few weeks from late September until Oct 15th, this year’s festival is in its final days and so you don’t miss out we have all the details you need right here!
Berlin Leuchtet is a collaboration between numerous local companies, organisations, individuals and artists. The festival is an artistic celebration of Berlin and its people using light as the medium and the city itself as its canvas. The illuminations begin every night at 7.30 pm and run right through until midnight. Projections usually remain the same throughout the evening or run on a loop of anything from 5 to 20 minutes. The ‘shows’ on the Brandenburg Gate and on the front of the Reichstag have become highlights.
Local sights, important buildings and monuments and outstanding developments and creative achievements of the city itself are all put under the spotlight – literally! More than 2 million people are estimated to view the festival each year and it remains one of the highlights in Berlin’s autumn calendar.
You can easily make your way around the city to see some of the centrally located illuminations using the interactive map showing all the locations. There is also a handy app to give you access and a guide via your mobile phone. This map below showing the closest ubahn stations to the illuminations is also useful. But if you really want to see everything and prefer to have the guesswork work done for you, there are a range of organised tours to choose from.
